Class 7 TDG: Radioactive Materials

COURSE OUTLINE
This course focuses on the practical aspects of the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulations with respect to Class 7 Radioactive Materials. It is designed for persons working or planning to work in an educational, medical or laboratory setting where radioactive materials are received or shipped by ground and/or air. The aim of this course is to provide the learner with the knowledge to handle, receive, prepare for transport and transport radioactive materials while protecting the safety of the public and adhering to all governing regulations.
Upon successful completion of the exam at the end of this course, students will be provided with a Certificate of Training indicating that they have successfully passed Class 7 Radioactive Materials Transport Training in accordance with requirements as dictated by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission’s Packaging and Transport of Nuclear Substances Regulations, and Transport Canada’s Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulations.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Joe is a highly sought-after radiation safety instructor in Canada. His training courses consistently receive high ratings and excellent reviews. Joe has been designated an Industry Services trainer for Radiation Safety Officer Courses and Transportation of Dangerous Goods-Radioactive Materials. He has provided radiation safety training to nuclear medicine departments, cancer care centers, fire fighters, military, clinical genetics, biotechnology, radiation therapy and occupational health and safety sectors.
He is also currently with BCIT in Vancouver, BC where he is the Radiation Safety Officer and instructor in radiation safety courses. At BCIT, he is also the provider of radiation survey meter calibration services.
Joe also worked at the British Columbia Cancer Agency as a Medical Physics Assistant where he was responsible for the implementation and design of the Quality Control Program for 8 Linear Accelerators, CT simulators, a Cobalt Teletherapy Unit, and X-Ray Simulator.
Joe received his BSc in Physics from the University of British Columbia. Joe has been a Registered Radiation Safety Professional and received his CRPA(R) designation from the Canadian Radiation Protection Association.

Key Knowledge Requirements for Certification as a Class II Nuclear Facility RSO

This course is intended to provide prospective candidates for certification as a Class II Nuclear Facility RSO with an overview of the key knowledge needed to successfully complete the certification exam. It starts with a brief history of the evolution of the Class II Nuclear Facility and Prescribed Equipment Regulations, including the implementation of the RSO certification requirements under section 15.1 in 2015.
Thereafter, the course focuses on the key knowledge areas related to Class II Nuclear Facilities which are normally assessed as part of the CII RSO exam. Emphasis is placed on:
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:
Jeff retired from the Accelerators and Class II Facilities Division of the CNSC in January 2021, after 17 years with the Division. Prior to that, he had 20 years of experience in a wide range of radiation safety activities, including several years as the RSO for CancerCare Manitoba’s radiation therapy facilities. Teaching and mentoring new staff and students on topics such as radiation protection fundamentals and radiation shielding design was a key part of both careers. He is a long-time member of the CRPA.
